The opening stage of the Vuelta a Espana will take place in Seville this year.

SEVILLE, SPAIN, June 30, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- People using Seville hotels later this summer may find their visit coincides with the launch of this year's Vuelta a Espana.

As Spain's answer to the Tour de France, this epic cycle race is a major event on the country's sporting calendar and excitement is already building among fans.

The tour begins in Seville on August 28th this year, meaning holidaymakers staying in the Andalusian city will be among the first people to see the riders in action.

Overall, the Vuelta a Espana features 21 stages and covers approximately 3,337 kilometres as it makes its way through the country before arriving in Madrid on September 19th.

Seville has been included in the tour for the first time in 15 years, giving local people and holidaymakers an additional reason to attend the opening stage.

Setting off against the backdrop of the La Maestranza Bullring, the cyclists will complete a team time trial passing through some of the city's most famous landmarks.

After Seville, the tour route heads down to Marbella and along the Costa del Sol to Malaga, before heading on to Murcia.

Dating back to the 1760s, Seville's La Maestranza Bullring was immortalised by Bizet's famous opera Carmen.
